PVC/PVDC Film Grammage Testing Procedure

PVC/PVDC Film Structure
  • Take a selected sample of PVC/PVDC Film. Cut the sample into 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm it’s suitable with the help of a GSM Plate. Weight the samples one by one on an analytical balance. Its reading records it.
  • Total Grammage = weight in grams 100 or 400 (if the sample is cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • Take the total Grammage sample and dip it in a beaker containing acetone (or ethyl acetate). We ensure the sample is completely dipped in regent. After 15 to 20 minutes, we check the intermittency, whether the PVDC layer is separated or not.
  • After the PVDC and PVC layers are separated the sample is collected. In both layers, the sample is dried in a hot air oven for 5 minutes. Then cool at room temperature. Take the weight of the PVDC layer and record the weight
  • Grammage of PVDC Layer = weight in gram x 100 or 400(if the sample is cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The PVC Layer absorbs the regent and then swells the sample. It does not get an accurate weight, so we calculate the GSM using the GSM of PVDC.
  • Grammage Of PVC layer = Total Grammage – Grammage Of PVDC
