PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil Testing Procedure

The PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil is made from a thin layer of PVDC laminated with PE (Polyethylene) on the PVC layer laminated on one side, the aluminium layer laminated with another side of PVDC layer, it is used as a multi-structure foil. Foil is used in packaging pharmaceutical finished products like tablets and capsules. It is a barrier to moisture, heat, light, and environmental conditions.

PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil structure

1. Description:

The PVDC thin layer is laminated with PE (polyethylene) and PVC (Polyvinylidene chloride) on one side, while the aluminium layer is laminated on the other. The foil of two types printed or unprinted, printed foil printing on the aluminium layer side and PVC side unprinted

2. Text Matter:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil is printed with text matter, the text matter is matched with the shade card or artwork.

3. Color Scheme:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil is printed, and its printing text matter color scheme matches the shade card or Pantone card.

4. Width:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil testing measures the width of the sample. Take the reading and note down the sample measuring with the help of a measuring scale.

5. Inner core diameter:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil is in a roll form, measure the inner core diameter with the help of a measuring scale, take the readings one by one, and note down the reading.

6. Grammage:

  • Total Grammage:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil of testing Grammage testing, take the sample cut the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm with the help of a GSM Plate, weigh the sample at analytical balance, calculate the Grammage by the given formula,

Total Grammage= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For each layer:

Take the total Grammage sample, and dip the sample in a glass beaker containing ethyl acetate. They ensure the sample is completely dipped in solution. After some time each layer separated. The first layer separated the PVC Layer and the aluminium layer. After some time the PE and the PVDC layers separated, and they separated the layer till the separated layer. Dry the sample in a hot air oven at 700c for 2 min. cool the sample weighing the sample at the analytical balance. The calculation of Grammage by the given formula,

  • The PVC Layer = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The Aluminium layer= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The PE Layer= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The PVDC Layer= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

7. Identification by FTIR:

  • For the PVC Layer:

The identification of the sample of the PVC layer from the “Grammage the PVC layer” takes the sample from. The PVC layer sample is done by identification testing performed with the help of an instrument by FTIR. The sample of the PVC layer identifies its instrument. Its sample compares the sample of the PVC Layer reference standard. We take the PVC Reference Standard and the sample of the PVC Layer side. Its graph is plotted at a wavelength of 3800-650cm-1.

The spectrum obtained from the specimen exhibits major absorption bands only at the same wavelengths as the spectrum of the PVC reference standard.

  • For the PE Layer:

  • For the PVDC layer:

The PVDC (Poly Vinylidene chloride) layer sample is done by identification testing performed with the help of an instrument by FTIR. The sample of the PVDC layer identifies its instrument. Its sample compares the sample of the PVDC Layer reference standard. We take the PVDC Reference Standard and the sample of the PVDC layer side. Its graph is plotted at a wavelength of 3800-650cm-1.

8. Identification of Aluminum layer:

Take the sample of Aluminium layer Grammage, This test is performed to identify aluminium by the chemical method. Take a sample of the Grammage of the aluminium layer. Take in a beaker mix 30ml 1NHCL then heat on a hot plate. The beaker aluminium foil to dissolve, in solution, add about 0.5 ml conc HCL and thioacetamide regents, no precipitate is formed, add dropwise NaoH solution, and a gelatinous white precipitate is formed which dissolves on further addition of 1NaoH Solution after gradually addition ammonium hydroxide solution .gelatinous white precipitate is re-formed.

9. Thickness:

  • Total thickness of the PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil

The selected sample of the PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil measures the total thickness with the help of a Digital micrometer. Take the reading and mote down the reading.

  • For The PVC Layer:

The selected sample of the PVC Layer from “The Grammage of PVC Layer” measures the total thickness with the help of a Digital micrometer. Take the reading and mote down the reading.

  • For the PE Layer:

The selected sample of the PE Layer from “The Grammage of PE Layer” measures the total thickness with the help of a Digital micrometer. Take the reading and mote down the reading.

  • For the PVDC Layer:

The selected sample of the PVDC Layer from “The Grammage of PVDC Layer” measures the total thickness with the help of a Digital micrometer. Take the reading and mote down the reading.

10. Pinhole Testing of the PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil

The pinhole testing of the sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil testing foil of illuminated magnifier tester instrument. When the sample is put on the bench of the pinhole tester. The background light is identified as the hole in the Foil sample. It visually checks the sample and does not have any holes. It test identified the sample has no holes.
