PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum Foil Grammage testing procedure

The sample PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil is made from PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), PE (Polyethylene), PVDC (Polyvinyl dene chloride), and an aluminium layer. Its structure made the PVDC layer laminated with an Aluminium layer on one side. The PVDC layer is laminated with PE and PVC on the other side. The foil is multi-structure foil. The aluminium layer is the outer side and the PVC layer is the inner side of the blister packaging. The blister packaging of the lidding foil. It is used for packaging pharmaceutical finished products tablets, and capsules.

PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil structure
  • Total Grammage:

The sample of PVC/PE/PVDC/Alum foil for the testing of total Grammage cut the sample 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2 (as applicable) with the help of a GSM plate. If the sample is printed the cotton or cloth dipped in ethyl acetate is rubbed on the text matter removed on the aluminium layer. The sample dried at room temperature. Weighing the sample at analytical balance. Calculation of the total Grammage by the given formula,

Total Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

  • Aluminium Grammage:

The sample of total Grammage dipped in the 10% sodium hydroxide solution containing glass beaker. In the solution, the aluminium layer is dissolved. After some time the aluminium layer dissolves the remaining sample PVC/PE/PVDC layer. Wash the sample with water. The sample dry in the hot air oven for 2 min at 650c. Cool the sample in a desiccator. Weighing the sample at analytical balance, calculation Grammage given formula,

PVC/PE/PVDC Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

Aluminium Grammage = total Grammage – PVC/PE/PVDC Grammage

  • The PVC/PE/PVDC Grammage:

The sample of the PVC/PE/PVDC layer dipped in an ethyl acetate-containing glass beaker. After some time 15- 20 min PVC Layer separated from the PE/PVDC layer. After 30-40 min PE and PVDC layers separated each layer. Wash the all Layer with water. Dry the sample PVC, PE, and PVDC layer in a hot air oven for 2 min at 650c. Cool the sample in a desiccator, weigh the sample at analytical balance, and calculate the Grammage by the given formula.

PVC Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

PE Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

PVDC Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)
