Paper/PE Foil Testing Procedure

The paper/PE foil is made from the paper layer and laminated with the PE layer. This foil is made of multi-structure foil. Paper/PE foil is a composite material comprising a layer of paper combined with a layer of polyethylene (PE) film. This combination results in a material that has the benefits of both paper and plastic. The paper provides strength, printability, and a natural look, while the polyethylene adds water resistance, barrier properties, and durability. This foil is used in the strip packaging.

Paper/PE foil structure
  1. Description:

The paper layer is laminated with the PE layer (polyethylene) making the Paper/PE Foil. The foil is one side printed on unprinted foil.

2.Text matter:

The foil is paper/PE foil, which is a printed sample, the printed foil matches with shade card or artwork.

3. Color Scheme:

The foil is printed foil, and the printed text matter color scheme matches the shade card or Pantone card.

4. Width:

The foil is a Paper/PE sample of the testing width of the foil. With the help of a measuring scale. Taken the reading and noted the reading.

5. Inner core diameter:

The sample paper/PE foil is in roll form and the roll with the help of a measuring scale. The roll’s inner core diameter measures the roll and notes down reading.

6. PE Layer of Identification by FTIR

The identification of the Paper/PE Foil sample is done by identification testing performed with the help of an instrument by FTIR. The sample of the PE side layer identifies its instrument. Its sample compares the sample of the LDPE Layer reference standard. We take the LDPE Reference Standard and the sample of the PE Layer side. Its graph is plotted at a wavelength of 3800-650cm-1.

The spectrum obtained from the specimen exhibits major absorption bands only at the same wavelengths as the spectrum of the LDPE reference standard.

7. Grammage:

  • Total Grammage:

The sample of a paper/PE foil is the total Grammage testing the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm (if applicable) with the help of a GSM plate. Weighing the sample at analytical balance, calculating the Grammage by the given formula,

Total Grammage = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For PE Layer:

Take the sample of total Grammage sample, and dip a glass beaker containing hot water. After some time rub the sample of paper side with cotton. The paper completely separated from the PE layer, wash the sample with water, and dry the sample of the PE Layer in a hot air oven at 700c for 1 min. cool the sample and take the weight of the PE layer at the analytical balance, calculating the Grammage by the given formula.

PE Layer Grammage = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For paper layer:

Paper layer Grammage = Total Grammage – PE layer Grammage

8. Thickness

  • Total thickness

The selected sample of Paper/PE foil is measured with the total thickness with the help of a digital micrometer. The sample measures the reading and notes down.

  • PE Layer thickness

Take a sample of the PE Layer Grammage and measure the thickness with the help of a digital micrometer. The sample measures the reading and notes down.

9. Pinhole testing of foil

For the pinhole testing of foil, take the selected sample of Paper/PE foil testing foil of the illuminated magnifier tester instrument. When the sample is put on the bench of the pinhole tester, the background light is on the toggle, the sample checks the respect to the background light identified as the hole in the Foil sample. It visually checks the sample and does not have any holes. The test identified that the sample had no holes.
