OPA/Alum Foil Testing Procedure:

The OPA/Alum foil is made of a thin Aluminium layer laminated with OPA (oriented polyamide known as nylon). The laminate is especially suitable for drugs that are easily affected even when other units in the pack are opened. This foil uses the packaging of pharmaceutical finished products like, tablets, capsules, and other forms.

OPA/Alum foil structure

1.Description:

The aluminium foil is laminated with OPA (oriented polyamide). One side is printed, the other is plain, or both are plain unprinted foil.

2. Text matter:

The OPA/Alum Foil is printed, and the foil is printed text matter to match a shade card or artwork.

3. Color scheme:

Take the total Grammage sample and dip the sample glass beaker containing the 10% solution of sodium hydroxide solution. After some time the aluminium layer is dissolved in this solution. The remaining sample is the OPA layer. Dry the sample in a hot air oven for 1 minute at 700c. Weighing the OPA layer at analytical balance, then calculate the Grammage by the given formula,

OPA Layer Grammage = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For the Aluminium layer

Grammage of Aluminium layer = Total Grammage – OPA Layer Grammage

7. Identification of the Aluminium layer:

The sample of OPA/Alum foil is For the identification testing of the aluminium Layer, Weigh the sample of the 15 mg sample and put it in a beaker mixing 30ml 1NHCL then heat the beaker aluminium foil to dissolve, in solution add about 1 ml HCL and 1 ml of thioacetamide regents, no precipitate is formed, add dropwise NaoH solution, a gelatinous white precipitate is formed which dissolve on further addition of 1NaoH Solution after gradually addition ammonium hydroxide solution .gelatinous white precipitate is re-formed.

8. Thickness of the OPA/Alum foil:

  • Total Thickness:

The selected sample of OPA/Alum foil is tested for total thickness measuring with the help of a digital micrometer, the sample measures the reading and notes the measured reading.

  • For OPA Layer:

The selected sample of OPA layer Grammage sample is tested for total thickness measuring with the help of a digital micrometer, the sample measures the reading and notes the measured reading.

9. Pinhole testing of OPA/Alum foil
