OPA/AL/HSL Foil Testing Procedure

OPA/AL/HSL Foil is made from a thin layer of the aluminium layer laminated with one side OPA (oriented polyamide) and the other side coated with an HSL layer. Its foil is made with three layers of OPA (Orinated polyamide) aluminium layer, and HSL (Heat seal lacquers). It is a multi-structure layer foil. It foil is packaging the pharmaceutical finished products tablets, capsules, and bulk. It is packaging the sensitive finished product. Its foil is a barrier to moisture, oxygen, light, and other environmental contamination

OPA/AL/HSL Foil
  1. Description:

The thin aluminum layer is laminated with OPA (Ordinated polyamide) on one side and, laminated with HSL (Heat Seal Lacquerer), on the OPA side printed or unprinted foil.

2. Text Matter:

The foil is printed, and then the text matter matches the shade card or artwork.

3. Color:

The foil is printed then the text matter color scheme matches the shade card or Pantone card.

4. Width:

The OPA/AL/HSL Foil tests width and measuring width with the help of a measuring scale. The sample measures the width and reading notes down.

5. Inner core Diameter:

The foil of OPA/AL/HSL is in a roll. The role is to fix the diameter, the inner core diameter measured with the help of a measuring scale. The sample measure and note down.

6. Identification by FTIR

The identification test of the Foil OPA/AL/HSL Sample, this testing is performed with the help of FTIR Instrument. In this foil identification test HSL Layer, first of fall, we platted the graph of Zeon reference standard, then after scanning the sample of HSL Layer sample. Both reference standards and the HSL Layer sample plotted the graph at 3800-650 cm-1 by the FTIR Instrument.

The spectrum of the specimen exhibits major absorption bands only at the same wavelength as the spectrum of the HSL Layer sample and Zeon reference standard.

7. Grammage:

  • Total Grammage:

Take the sample of OPA/AL/HSL foil in a stock sample, the testing of total Grammage, and the selected sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm with the help of a GSM plate, take the weight at analytical balance and Grammage calculation by the given formula,

Total Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut in 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For the HSL layer:

The total Grammage sample taken and dipped in a glass beaker containing ethylene acetate. Rub on the HSL Layer with the help of cotton after some time HSL Layer separated from the OPA/AL Layer. Take the OPA/AL Layer foil and dry them at room temperature, take weight at analytical balance, then calculate by the given formula,

OPA/AL Layer Grammage= weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut in 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 cm)

HSL layer Grammage = TOTAL Grammage – OPA/AL Layer Grammage

  • For OPA AND AL Layer:

Take the sample of the HSL Layer separated OPA/AL Layer. Dip the sample of OPA/AL Layer in 25% glacial acetic acid in water. Boil the glass beaker containing the sample. After some time aluminium layers are separated from the OPA layer, and the glass beaker containing the sample boils till the sample is separated from the layer. Dry the sample in a hot air oven at 700 c for 2 min. After cooling and weighing the sample at analytical balance. Calculation Grammage the given formula,

 Alum layer Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut in 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 cm)

OPA layer Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut in 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 cm)

8. Identification of Aluminium

This test is performed to identify aluminium by the chemical method. Take a sample of the Grammage of the aluminium layer. Take in a beaker mix 30ml 1NHCL then heat on a hot plate. The beaker aluminium foil to dissolve, in solution, add about 0.5 ml conc HCL and thioacetamide regents, no precipitate is formed, add drop wise NaoH solution and a gelatinous white precipitate is formed which dissolves on further addition of 1NaoH Solution after gradually addition ammonium hydroxide solution .gelatinous white precipitate is re-formed.

9. Thickness

  • Total thickness:

Take the sample of OPA/AL/HSL foil total thickness testing measure with the help of a digital micrometer. Measure the thickness and record the measured reading.

  • OPA layer:

Take the sample of OPA Layer Grammage testing foil OPA Layer thickness testing measure with the help of a digital micrometer. Measure the thickness and record the measured reading.

  • Alum layer:

Take the sample of Alum Layer Grammage testing foil Alum Layer thickness testing measure with the help of a digital micrometer. Measure the thickness and record the measured reading.

10. Pinhole:

The selected sample of OPA/AL/HSL Foil tested the pinhole of the foil with the help of an instrument pinhole tester. The sample was plotted on the bench of the ill magnifier of the light background the light visually, not observing the hole in the sample. If the sample has a hole light passed the light, it is easily verified in a pinhole. It test is important for foil in pharmaceutical finished product packaging.
