What is light transmission testing?
The plastic packaging material that is used in pharmaceutical containers or dietary supplements. The plastic packaging material that is intended to protect from light or specified as light –resistance must meet the spectral transmission requirement specified limit.
The observed spectral transmission for plastic containers used for products intended for oral or topical use should not exceed 10% at any wavelength in the range of 290-450nm. Its test defines the material behavior of the light at different wavelengths. Some finished products are light sensitive then the containers are suitable for that product.
HDPE containers or plastic packaging materials are an integral part of pharmaceutical finish products to ensure their integral and self-life. Packaging material should not interact physically or chemically with the content in a way that identity, purity, stability efficiency, or safety is affected. Many packaging materials made from plastic polyethylene, polyolefin, and polyvinyl chloride are the most used
How testing of light transmission of HDPE Container
This test is performed with the help of a spectrophotometer, given below some step-by-step testing procedures for light transmission of HDPE container
- Cut the selected sample of HDPE Container
- After cutting wash and dry the specimen, and take care to avoid scratching the surface
- Taking care to avoid leaving fingerprints or other marks on the surface through light must pass
- First the set wavelength 290 nm to 490 nm
- Make a method which wavelength 450nm to 290nm in transmittance mode
- Spectrophotometer set in transmittance mode
- Spectrophotometer run to auto zero
- After auto zero run the uv then make a blank path
- run the blank name path
- In blank path observation results the transmittance is 100%
- Make a sample of the HDPE Container path
- Place the specimen sample in uv cabinet in the sample cabinet
- The sample clean cotton or tissue roll avoids the many scratches the fingerprint
- The specimen sample runs 450nm to 290nm
- In running mode uv do not open the cabinet door
- The sample specimen the sample observed reading not more than 10% in transmittance mode
