Grammage Testing of PVC/PE/PVDC Film

PVC/PE/PVDC FILM
  • Selected sample of PVC/PE/PVDC Film cut the sample 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm with the help of a GSM plate. Weight the sample at analytical balance one by one and record it.
  • Total Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • Take the sample of total Grammage sample and dip it in a beaker containing ethyl acetate. Ensures the sample is completely dipped in ethyl acetate regent.
  • Take the sample PVDC Layer and dry the sample in a hot air oven at 1100 c. After drying the sample and cooling the sample in the decicator.
  • Take the sample PE Layer and dry the sample in a hot air oven at 750 After drying the sample and cooling the sample in the decicator.
  • After cooling the sample take weights one by one and record it.
  • Grammage of PVDC layer=weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • Grammage of PE layer=weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The PVC layer absorbs the solvent so, it is not accurate to calculate the PVC layer GSM. PVC layer GSM is calculated by the PE layer and PVDC layer GSM.
  • Grammage of PVC layer= total Grammage- (Grammage of PVDC-Grammage of PE )

                                                                     OR

  • Take a sample of the total Grammage dip in the beaker containing acetone. The sample is completely dipped in regent solvent. After 20 to 25 min check intermittently whether the PVDC layer is separated OR not.
  • After the PVDC layer is separated then dry the layer in a hot air oven at 1100c for 5 min. then cool the sample and take the sample weight at analytical balance.
  • Grammage of PVDC= weight in gram x 100 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • Take a sample after removing the PVDC layer and dip the sample in a beaker containing 40 ml of acetic acid and 60 ml of water mixed a make a solution. It solution boils for 5 min than after the PE and PVC layers are separated. take the PE layer dry in a hot air oven for 5 min. cool the sample then take the weight
  • Grammage of PE = weight in gram x 100 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)
  • The PVC layer absorbs the solvent hence the PVC GSM does not find
  • Grammage of PVC layer= total Grammage- (Grammage of PVDC-Grammage of PE )
