Alum/PET Foil Grammage Testing Procedure

Aluminium/PET Film Structure
  • The Alum/PET foil is made of the aluminium layer laminated with a PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) layer.  It is two types of foil printed and unprinted. The foil is printed on the aluminium layer side. The PET side layer is in contact with the drugs. Foil is used in the packaging of pharmaceutical finished products such as tablets, capsules, and bulk products. Its foil is used to secure the moisture, air, heat, and other environmental conditions. Its foil is better for sensitive product packaging.
  • Total Grammage

The testing of samples of Alum/PET Foil Grammage testing. The sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 area or 5 x 5 cm2 area (if applicable) with the help of a GSM plate. The foil is printed, and then the cotton or tissue roll is dipped in ethyl acetate to remove the printing text matter on the foil. Weighing the sample at analytical balance, calculating the Grammage by the given formula,

Total Grammage= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

  • For PET layer:

The sample of total Grammage sample dipped in a 10% solution of sodium hydroxide (make 10 % solution of sodium hydroxide in a glass beaker of 500 ml. weighing the 10 gm of sodium hydroxide pallet in a glass beaker, add 50ml water dissolve the sodium hydroxide and sonication the sample, then dissolve the solution makeup with at 100 ml. it is ready 10% solution of sodium hydroxide). The aluminium layer is dissolved in the solution, the remaining sample is the PET layer. Dry the sample in a hot air oven for 2 min at 650c Cool the sample in a desiccator.

After the sample cools weigh the sample at an analytical balance, calculating the Grammage by the given formula,

PET Layer Grammage= weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2)

  • For Aluminium layer:

The Grammage of Aluminium layer test on the calculation by the given formula,

Grammage of Aluminium layer = (total Grammage – PET layer Grammage)
