OPA/LDPE film Grammage Testing Procedure

OPA/LDPE film Structure

The OPA/LDPE foil is LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) laminated with an OPA (orientated polyamide) layer. It is two types printed and unprinted the printing text matter is on the OPA layer side and the LDPE layer is the inner side of the foil. This foil is used as a pharmaceutical finished bulk product. The packaging style is sachet. The LDPE layer is a good moisture barrier that protects from heat, air, and environmental conditions.

  • Total Grammage:

The testing of the total Grammage of sample OPA/LDPE foil is cut the sample 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2 area (as applicable). If the sample is printed text matter, remove the sample with the help of cotton or tissue roll dipped in ethyl acetate and rubbing on the printed side of text matter, after removing the text matter. Weighing the sample at analytical balance, calculate the total Grammage by the given formula,

Total Grammage = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2 area)

  • For OPA layer Grammage:

The sample of total Grammage is dipped in a glass beaker containing acetone, boil the solution. After some time, the LDPE layer is dissolved in acetone, and the remaining layer is the OPA layer. Wash the sample in water and dry the sample in a hot air oven for 2 min at 650c. It cooled the sample in a desiccator. Weighing the sample at analytical balance. Calculation of the Grammage by the given formula,

OPA Layer Grammage = weight in grams x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x 10 cm2 or 5 x 5 cm2 area)

  • For LDPE Layer Grammage:

The LDPE layer Grammage calculation by the total Grammage and OPA layer Grammage, given formula,

LDPE Layer Grammage = Total Grammage – LDPE Layer Grammage
