Paper/Alum/LDPE Foil Testing Procedure

Paper/alum/LDPE foil is made from a thin layer of aluminium laminated LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) on one side and the other side laminated with paper. Its foil is multi-structure foil. Its foil outer side paper and drug contact layer is LDPE (or inner side). Its foil is used in pharmaceutical finished product tablets, capsules in strip packaging, or other packaging. Its foil is also in used sachet packaging.

  1. Description:

The aluminium layer is laminated with one side of the paper and another coated with LDPE (Low-density polyethylene). The foil paper side is printed or unprinted.

2. Text matter:

The sample of paper/alum/LDPE Foil is printed, match the sample with a shade card or artwork.

3. Color scheme:

The sample printed matches the text matter color scheme with a shade card or Pantone card

4. Width:

The paper/alum/LDPE foil sample tests the measuring scale’s width. The sample measure and note down reading

5. Inner core diameter:

The sample is in roll form and the roll’s inner core diameter is with the help of a measuring scale. Take the reading and note it down.

6. Identification by FTIR:

The sample of Paper/Alum/LDPE Foil from the taken LDPE side layer. The identification was tested with the help of the FTIR instrument. The identification test of the LDPE layer. Take a sufficient sample and put it on the FTIR instrument. The reference standard is used in LDPE. The scan of the LDPE standard reference and the sample of Paper/Alum/LDPE Foil is the LDPE side layer scan.

The spectra were plotted between wavelengths 650-3800 cm-1. Both the sample and reference sample match.

The spectrum of the specimen exhibits major absorption bands only at the same wavelength as the spectrum of the LDPE sample and reference standard LDPE.

7.Grammage:

  • Total Grammage:

The testing of the sample Paper/Alum/LDPE Foil is a taken the sample total Grammage. Take the sample cut with the help of 10 x10 cm or 5 x 5 cm GSM Plate. Weight the sample at analytical balance, Grammage calculation by the given formula,

Total Grammage = weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

  • For LDPE Layer :

Take the total Grammage sample and dip it in a glass beaker containing Acetone. Boiling the sample after some time the LDPE Layer Dissolved in Acetone. The remaining sample paper/alum layer. Dry the sample at room temp and take the weight at analytical balance, calculate the Grammage by the given formula.

LDPE Layer Grammage = total Grammage – Paper/Alum Grammage

  • For Alum and Paper:

Take the remaining sample of the LDPE Layer, dip the sample in HOT water, and after some time rum the sample with cotton or cloth to the paper layer separated from the aluminium layer and wash the sample from the water. Dry the sample in a hot air oven at 700 C FOR 2 min, then take the weight at analytical balance calculation the Grammage by the given formula.

Alum layer Grammage= weight in gram x 100 or 400 (if the sample cut 10 x10 cm or 5 x 5 cm)

Paper layer Grammage= paper/alum Grammage – alum layer Grammage

8. Identification of Aluminium by chemical method

This test is performed to identify aluminium by the chemical method. Take a sample of the Grammage of the aluminium layer. Take in a beaker mix 30ml 1NHCL then heat on a hot plate. The beaker aluminium foil to dissolve, in solution, add about 0.5 ml conc HCL and thioacetamide regents, no precipitate is formed, add dropwise NaoH solution and a gelatinous white precipitate is formed which dissolves on further addition of 1NaoH Solution after gradually addition ammonium hydroxide solution .gelatinous white precipitate is re-formed.

9. Thickness:

  • Total Thickness

Take a sample of Paper/alum/LDPE Foil for the testing of the total Grammage with the help of a digital micrometer, take the reading, and note it down.

  • Alum layer

Take the sample of Grammage of the Alum layer sample for the testing of the thickness of aluminium layer with the help of a digital micrometer, take the reading, and note it down.

10. Pinhole

The selected sample of Paper/Alum/LDPE foil tested the pinhole of the sample foil with the help of an instrument pinhole tester. The sample was plotted on the back of the light background the light visually, the not observe the hole in the sample. If the sample has a hole light passed the light, it is easily verified in a pinhole. It test is important for foil in pharmaceutical finished product packaging.
